Why choose Iyengar yoga?
One of the most respected methods in the world today, considered unique for its approach it focuses on the correct precision and alignment of the body. Mr Iyengar, at the age of 92, still has input into the training of his teachers, who spend many years working to rigorously high standards to ensure their own practice and teaching ability meet the exacting requirements of the Iyengar method.
What are the benefits of yoga?
Through the practice of postures (asanas) the body is taught to open, extend and lengthen. This helps to improve breathing, circulation and bodily functions. Through regular attendance students find that they gain strength and agility as well as enhancing both physical and mental well being.
What should I expect?
At the beginning of each class there is a settling time, the class will then proceed through a combination of demonstration and instruction. Our teachers are experienced and fully qualified to help students with their progress. They may verbally instruct or give physical adjustments with the use of props such as blankets, bolsters, belts or chairs.
What should I wear?
Something comfortable, like a T-shirt and shorts, or leggings – yoga is always taught in barefeet.
What do I need to bring?
Our studio is fully equipped, we provide everything including mats. Just bring yourself.
Can I eat before class?
Try to give a heavy meal about 4 hours to digest before class, or a couple of hours for a snack or drink.
Will it help with stress levels?
Restoring balance – stress related illnesses can interrupt the body’s balance – an overload on the nervous system leaves many people feeling stripped of vitality. Yoga has all the components which help with many physical and mental conditions alongside reducing anxiety and muscular tension. With regular practice people experience positive results.
Through regular practice both the circulatory and respiratory systems become healthier and the body is better prepared to fight off diseases.
What if I have any injuries or health concerns?
Yoga can improve many conditions. It is always best to advise your teacher of any health concerns you may have. Iyengar yoga teachers are trained to modify and suggest alternative postures to enable you to practice safely.
Ladies need to advise their teacher when menstruating so that suitable poses can be applied.

Since starting yoga at the Maidstone Yoga Centre it has made a vast improvement to my scoliosis. It has been through practising various yoga poses which has given strength and opening to my upper back and in main improved my overall posture in general.
The tutors at the centre are friendly and knowledgable giving clear instruction of each pose and ensuring that they are accessible to all. Both Lin and Leo are fantastic at explaining and making adjustments that have furthered my understanding and development week on week.With a emphasis on good posture and alignment this is something that I have found beneficial both on a off the mat.
