The eight stages (or limbs) of Yoga
This initiates a path of practice, which as a yoga practitioner should be followed to reach physical and emotional stability, a path that unites body and mind in a journey that enhances all senses and ultimate self-realization.
Yama - universal moral principles such as non-violence and truthfulness
Niyama - rules of personal conduct, this applies to oneself, such as self study, dedication, contentment and purity
Asana - the practice of Yoga postures
Pranayama - the practice of breathing techniques
Pratyahara - control of senses from external objects
Dharana - concentration of the mind. The mind has to be stilled in order to achieve a state of complete absorption
Dhyana - meditation leading to a state of supreme bliss
Samadhi - the peak of meditation which leads to a state of higher consciousness.
